Build a Home for an Animal

Students choose an animal, discover what it needs to live, and create a model habitat from household or recycled materials.

The driving question

How can we build a home that gives an animal everything it needs?

Choose and investigate

Where does it live? What does it eat?Where does it find water? How does it stay safe?

Create your habitat

  1. Choose an animal. Draw it or find a picture.
  2. Learn what it needs. Record food, water, shelter, space, and safety.
  3. Sketch a plan. Label the important parts of its home.
  4. Build a model. Use a box, paper, cardboard, craft materials, or clean recycled items.
  5. Check your work. Make sure every animal need is represented.
  6. Share your habitat. Explain how each feature helps the animal.
